Poker-texas Holdem table positioning

The first thing we need to understand is our seated positions relative to the button otherwise known as the dealers position.

Next we have to understand the range of hands we should be playing relative of our seated positions.  The red seats represent EP early positions, the blue seats-MP middle positions and the green seats LP late position.

From early position the first player to bet preflop sits to the left of the big blind this position is known as being UTG under the gun and is the first person to bet, call or fold.  The range of hands under the gun needs to play are strong  AK-AQ etc not 74 75 j4 j5 as these are just rubbish cards in this position.

If you’re not cautious from UTG and limp in calling the blind with 8 7 suited theres high probably MP or LP will raise with much stronger hands forcing you to fold.  When a player says they’ve got position on you, this means they are acting after you.

A simple reminder of having position over another player is that the last person to act has the option of raising checking or folding-they therefore have position.    Thus the button or dealers position is obviously the strongest position.

The later your table positioning is- and if there have been no raises already placed in front of you by early and middle positions then you can play on weaker hands.  I have provided a chart below that demonstrates the range of hands best played from  early middle and late positions. The top chart relates to playing suited cards and pairs while the bottom chart relates to unsuited cards.

These charts represent a range of hands best suited for a full table.  As each player gets knocked off the table you start to play a broader range of hands.  For example by the time there are only two players left on the table, lets say you are heads up with one other player and all the others have been knocked out, you should be playing 90% of the hands dealt.  The hands I won’t play even heads up are 6-2  8-3 9-2  7-2 8-2.     Ps:  These charts refer to cards you are able to play in those positions.  Take a look at the 10 9 suited, this merely means you can call from any position, I wouldn’t suggest raising these from any position.
